More than 150 scarecrows have gone up along the brick walkways at Peddler’s Village, and this weekend the village throws the party that goes with them.

The annual Scarecrow Festival runs Saturday, September 13, and Sunday, September 14, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission and parking are free, and shops stay open until 8 p.m. Saturday.

The weekend fills the grounds with scarecrow-making workshops, pumpkin painting, pumpkin bowling, hay piles, sand art and lawn games, plus Bootlegger Bo’s Gem Mine and axe throwing with ThrowHouse. Reservations are strongly encouraged for the workshops.

Live music runs both days at the gazebo. Borderline plays Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a scarecrow stilt walker working the crowd during the same hours, and Station Hill Bluegrass takes over from 3 to 6 p.m. On Sunday, Martin & Kelly perform from noon to 4 p.m. while the Back Porch Jug Band plays the courtyard from noon to 3 p.m.

The festival is tied to Scarecrows in the Village, the 46th edition of the display and competition, which runs September 8 through October 26. Families, artists, shops and community organizations build the entries, which are judged in categories including Traditional, Funny Bones, Fright Night and a kids-only division. Visitors vote for their favorites through the Peddler’s Village mobile app, and winners take home cash prizes.

Peddler’s Village occupies a stretch of Route 202 in Lahaska with colonial-style buildings, more than 60 shops and gardens that have won regional awards. Fall programming continues past the festival with OctoberFeast, a pumpkin-carving contest, Halloween events and the Apple Festival in November.
