The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) recently shared its preliminary employment report for September 2024, highlighting key trends in the state’s job market. From a steady unemployment rate to record-breaking job numbers, Pennsylvania’s labor landscape has shown remarkable stability and growth. Here’s a breakdown of the most notable data.

Unemployment Holds Steady for a Year Straight

Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate remained at 3.4% in September, marking the twelfth consecutive month at this level. This stability is a historic milestone, representing the longest streak on record (back to 1976). Compared to the national picture, Pennsylvania is outperforming, as the U.S. unemployment rate in September edged down by 0.1 percentage points to 4.1%. The state’s consistent 3.4% rate suggests a resilient job market.

Nonfarm Jobs Continue to Break Records

Despite a slight decrease in the labor force, Pennsylvania’s job numbers hit new highs. The state saw an increase of 6,800 nonfarm jobs in September, setting a new record of 6,205,000 positions. This growth marks the fourteenth consecutive month that Pennsylvania has reached a record-breaking job count.

Of the 11 major industry sectors, five experienced job growth. The most significant surge was in the leisure and hospitality sector, which added 6,100 positions, setting a record high. Meanwhile, the education and health services sector reached its sixteenth consecutive month of record-high employment. This ongoing rise reflects the critical and expanding role these sectors play in Pennsylvania’s economy.

Annual Job Growth Demonstrates Sector Strengths

Looking at the year-over-year changes, Pennsylvania added 102,700 nonfarm jobs. Gains were seen in six of the 11 major industry sectors. The education and health services sector stood out, adding 59,800 jobs—more than half of the total yearly increase. This trend underscores a strong demand for healthcare and education professionals, which continues to drive job growth in the state.

Conclusion: A Resilient and Expanding Job Market

Pennsylvania’s employment data for September 2024 showcases a job market that is both steady and growing. With a stable unemployment rate and continued job creation across key sectors, the state’s economy appears to be in a strong position. The record-setting numbers in leisure, hospitality, education, and health services highlight the evolving demands of Pennsylvania’s labor market, providing insights into where future opportunities may lie.
