Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders outfielder Duke Ellis has set a new single-season stolen base record for the franchise, swiping 55 bags so far this year and shattering a mark that stood for nearly four decades. Ellis broke the previous record of 44, set by Tommy Barrett in 1989, needing just 85 games to do it compared to Barrett’s 120.

The milestone adds to a career-best stretch for Ellis, who also holds the franchise’s all-time career stolen base record with 97 total steals in a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre uniform. That mark surpassed the previous record of 82, held by former RailRider Nick Punto, who compiled his total over 263 games — nearly three times as many appearances as Ellis needed.

Ellis’s 55 steals this season still fall short of his own personal best of 57 stolen bases in a single year, set back in 2024, leaving open the possibility he could top his own career high before the RailRiders wrap up their 2026 campaign.

The RailRiders entered the week playing out the final stretch of their Triple-A schedule at PNC Field in Moosic, with the team’s speed on the basepaths — led by Ellis — a key storyline in a season that has kept Scranton/Wilkes-Barre near the top of the International League standings.
