The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) has released its preliminary employment situation report for June 2024.
For the ninth consecutive month, the Commonwealth’s unemployment rate held steady at 3.4%. This figure is just two-tenths of a percentage point above the record low of 3.2% seen in June 2023, indicating a sustained period of low unemployment.
The state’s civilian labor force, which includes residents working or looking for work, decreased by 2,000 from May’s record high, settling at 6,603,000 in June. This slight decline was soley attributed to a reduction in resident employment, which also dipped from a record high in May. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed residents remained unchanged.
The report also revealed that Pennsylvania’s total nonfarm jobs increased by 15,600 over the month, reaching a record high of 6,183,900. This marks the 11th consecutive month of record-high job counts for the state.
Employment rose in seven out of the eleven industry supersectors from May. The education and health services sector led the growth with an impressive addition of 8,300 jobs, marking its 13th consecutive record high. Furthermore, both the financial activities and leisure & hospitality sectors reached record high levels in June.
Year-over-year, Pennsylvania added 98,100 nonfarm jobs, with gains in seven of the eleven supersectors. The education and health services sector saw the largest annual growth, with an increase of 60,600 jobs.
