The Pittsburgh Penguins routed the Philadelphia Flyers 7-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the NHL season opener for both teams. OptaSTATS lists it as the biggest shutout win by a visiting team on opening night in league history. For the Flyers, it was the most lopsided opening-night defeat they’ve ever suffered. The sellout crowd at Xfinity Mobile Arena was booing by the second intermission, with Philadelphia already down 5-0.

Pittsburgh outshot the Flyers 38-19. Goalie Arturs Silovs turned aside every shot he faced, repeating last year’s opener shutout, and Nicholas Robertson scored twice. Philadelphia’s first power play of the season came with the score already 5-0, and it went 0-for-3 on the night. Dan Vladar, who missed time in the preseason with an injury, made 31 saves. The Flyers have now lost both of their season openers under coach Rick Tocchet.

The game was a rematch of last spring’s first round, which Philadelphia won in six games before being swept by eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina in the second round. Both teams made the playoffs last season, with the Flyers finishing 43-27-12 and the Penguins 41-25-16.

The Penguins have won their home opener since, beating Montreal 6-5 in overtime on Saturday. The Flyers are 0-2-2. They lost 3-2 in overtime at New Jersey on Thursday and 3-2 in overtime to Carolina on Saturday, then fell 4-1 at Tampa Bay on Monday, their first four-game losing start since 2014-15.
