A special election to fill former state Rep. Joe Adams’ 139th District seat will coincide with the primary election on April 23, House Speaker Joanna McClinton (D-Philadelphia) announced Monday.

Adams (R-Wayne/Pike), who was serving his first term in the state House, announced his retirement on Friday. Adams had previously said he would not seek reelection after receiving medical news that required him to focus his priority on taking care of his family.

The special election will be the eighth of this legislative session following one on Tuesday to replace former Rep. John Galloway (D-Bucks) who resigned his 140th District seat after he was elected to a district judge position in November.

Adams’ resignation gives Democrats a razor-thin 101-100 majority going into Tuesday’s special election in the 140th. Depending who wins, the House could be tied once again at 101-101 or the Democrats could have a two-vote advantage when the lower chamber returns to session next month. Democrat Jim Prokopiak is facing Republican Candace Cabanas for the seat in a district that leans blue in purple suburban Bucks County.

The 140th race had attracted national attention, as it appeared control of the Pennsylvania House would hang in the balance. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee invested $50,000 into the House Democratic Caucus in late January.
