Americans for Prosperity endorses Bresnahan in PA-8

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) Action, the conservative super PAC backed by the Koch organization, has endorsed Republican Rob Bresnahan in his campaign against U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-8th District).

AFP Action said in a press release that Bresnahan, who owns a construction business, would be an advocate for policies to start and grow businesses in Pennsylvania, while claiming Cartwright has provided “lackluster representation” for the district in Congress.

“It’s time for new leadership in Congress and Rob Bresnahan will be part of a new generation of lawmakers in the Pennsylvania delegation that will turn the page on the status quo in Washington,” AFP Action senior advisor Ashley Klingensmith said in a statement.

Bresnahan is the fourth Pennsylvania candidate to be endorsed by AFP Action this cycle. The organization announced its support for Republican David McCormick for U.S. Senate before he even launched his campaign against U.S. Sen. Bob Casey. In 2023, AFP Action endorsed GOP state Rep. Rob Mercuri in his bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-17th District) and GOP state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie’s challenge to U.S. Rep. Susan Wild (D-7th District).

In November, the group announced its support for former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley’s bid for the White House.

In the 8th Congressional District, Cartwright currently holds a fundraising advantage over Bresnahan. The incumbent entered January with $2 million cash on hand. Bresnahan, who launched his campaign for Congress in November, entered January with $636,000 cash on hand.

Former President Donald Trump won the current boundaries of the 8th Congressional District in 2016 and 2020, making it the only Democrat-represented district in Pennsylvania to have that distinction. The Northeast Pennsylvania based district also includes Scranton, the boyhood home of President Joe Biden.

The Cook Political Report and Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball both rate the race for the 8th District as a toss-up.
